Middle College High School Additional Application Procedures

Students interested in applying for the Middle College High School program should complete the additional application packet located on the CPCC website and submit all required documents prior to the conclusion of the lottery.

NWSA Audition/Portfolio Assessment

A successful audition is required for entry to Northwest School of the Arts in addition to submitting a lottery application. Click here to schedule an audition.

Late Entry Requirements:

“Late Entry” means that a student is entering a specialized program at a non-entry grade level. They will be required to do a school-based assessment or a transcript review, and then after a successful assessment or review, apply for a Request for Transfer/Reassignment through Student Placement.

Programs that require late entry school based assessment are: Language Immersion (grades 1 and above) and Montessori (grades 2 and above).

Programs that require a late entry transcript review are: Blended & Virtual Learning (grades 11-12), International Baccalaureate (grades 11-12), Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology (grades 11-12), and World Language (grade 11-12).

2nd-8thgrades

 

To apply for late entry through the Request for Reassignment/ Transfer process:

Step 1: Contact the Montessori school directly to confirm whether space is available at the desired grade level.  Information can be found at http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartments/StudentPlacement

Step 2:  If space is available, arrange an appointment for a report card review and interview.  Bring the child’s most recent report card to the appointment.  The prospective student’s report card will be reviewed and an interview conducted by magnet school staff using a standardized late entry interview rubric.

Step 3:  Within three business days of the interview, the school will provide the family notice of the outcome on school letterhead.  If the interview confirms the student as having the qualities necessary to transition into the grade desired, this acknowledgement will be verified.  A letter of denial will be provided for students whom the interview indicates transition into a Montessori environment would not be appropriate.

Step 4: Upon receipt of the letter of approval, complete the online Request for Reassignment/ Transfer form.  For this form to be accepted, the family must indicate that they have reviewed the Magnet Expectations Agreement for the desired magnet theme.  The family submits the school’s letter of acknowledgement as supporting documentation to accompany the online Request for Reassignment/ Transfer form registered with the Student Placement office at the Smith Family Center.  Request approval is dependent upon grade level space availability.

 

World Language Schools:

 

-Collinswood Langauge Academy

– EE Waddell Language Academy

-Oaklawn Language Academy

 

 

1st-5th: Requires late entry assessment

6th-8th: Full Immersion Track requires late entry assessment

6th-8th: NON-immersion track. Apply in the lottery (Waddell and Oaklawn available only). Requires a Level III or higher on Reading EoG.

Step 2:  If space is available, arrange an appointment with the school for an assessment of the child’s level of proficiency in the target language.  The prospective student will be assessed for late entry into the language immersion program at the school using a standardized late entry assessment rubric.

 

Step 3: Upon completion of a successful assessment, the school will provide acknowledgement verifying this on school letterhead.

 

Step 4: Complete the online Request for Reassignment/ Transfer form.  For this form to be accepted, the family must indicate that they have reviewed the Magnet Expectations Agreement for the desired magnet theme.  The family submits the school’s acknowledgement letter of approval as supporting documentation to accompany the online Request for Reassignment/ Transfer form registered with the Student Placement office at the Smith Family Center.  Request approval is dependent upon grade level space availability.

Step 2:  Obtain an official transcript from the current school and bring it to the appointment in a sealed envelope.  The prospective student’s transcript will be reviewed by magnet school staff.  If the result of the transcript review indicates that the student has the necessary prerequisites for entry into the grade desired, acknowledgement of transcript review approval will be provided on school letterhead.
