The new North K-8 Language Academy–now officially named the North Academy of World Languages– is under construction at 12201 Hambright Road, Huntersville, with expected completion in August 2021. This school, whose new name was approved May 25, 2021, will serve the Violet transportation zone. Space is still available at this new school for the 2021-2022 year! Students will begin class at 9:15 am and end the day at 4:15 pm.

It has been decided through our meetings, community engagement, surveys and executive staff discussion to open the North K-8 Language Academy with the following:

  • The school will open with grades K-4, 6 & 7.
  • The primary languages will include Chinese, French, and German.
  • Grades K-1 will offer immersion in the areas of Chinese, French, and German.
  • Grades 2-4, 6 & 7 will provide language exploration experiences through elective areas and enhanced language classes. 
  • Rising 1st, 6th and 7th graders who live in the Violet zone will be assigned to North K-8 Language Academy.
  • Rising 2nd-5th graders currently enrolled at Waddell will stay at Waddell with transportation.
  • All students in the Japanese program will be grandfathered to South Academy of International Languages (Waddell).
  • Students currently enrolled at Waddell Language Academy who will be assigned to North K-8 for the 2021-2022 school year will have the option to remain at Waddell (recently named South Academy of International Languages.) They can select this option without transportation in this year’s lottery.

December 3, 2020 – Principal Profile Meeting

Join us for a community engagement meeting to identify the qualities and attributes for the new North K-8 Language Academy Principal. Our planning committee and teams have worked over the past few months organizing the development of this new school that will open August 2021. We will work with the Northeast Learning community, and Superintendent, Dr. John Wall.  Their role is to support the principal and leadership of the school.

January 12, 2021 – North K-8 Language Academy Principal Named

Lydia Fergison was named as the new principal of the North K-8 Language Academy during the CMS Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. She has been serving as the principal at Newell Elementary since 2015. Before that, she was the Assistant Principal at Albemarle Road Elementary from 2012 to 2015, an instructor at CPCC from 2012 to 2014, and a Spanish teacher at McClintock Middle School from 2003 to 2012. See more about Principal Fergison here.
